Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek — Commander Decks, New Mechanics, and What to Buy at Launch

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek has a release date locked in, four Commander precons with confirmed identities, and two brand-new mechanics on the way. With prerelease week starting 6 November, there is now enough confirmed detail to plan your collection and your Commander table in advance.

The Release at a Glance

The set releases worldwide on 13 November 2026, with prerelease events running from 6–12 November at local game stores. An MTG Arena digital release follows on 10 November. The timing is deliberate: as Wizards of the Coast have noted, the set is built to celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary, with the full franchise — from The Original Series through to Lower Decks — represented across the card list.

The main expansion (set code TRK) is Standard-legal, making this a full Universes Beyond release rather than a Commander-only product. That means Kirk and Janeway could be showing up at Friday Night Magic, not just in casual pods. The Commander-specific cards carry the set code TRC and are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.

Four Commander Precons — Themes and Colour Identities

Four preconstructed Commander decks ship alongside the main set, each built around a distinct slice of the franchise:

• Federation Fleet (Jeskai — white/blue/red): Focused on starships and card draw, pulling from the Picard and Janeway eras.
• Landing Party (Bant — green/white/blue): Built around landfall and away-team exploration, drawing on The Original Series.
• Klingon Fury (Mardu — white/black/red): An aggressive Warrior-tribal strategy with a combat-focused gameplan.
• We Are the Borg (Esper — white/blue/black): An artifact-creature deck centred on the brand-new Assimilate mechanic.

Face commanders and full decklists have not yet been published, so expect those to surface during spoiler season in the weeks ahead. Each precon represents a meaningfully different play style, which bodes well for the range of players the set is trying to reach.

New Mechanics to Know

Two new keywords arrive with the set: Assimilate and Face a Dilemma. Both Spacecraft and station — mechanics that debuted in Edge of Eternities — also return. Assimilate is central to the Borg precon and the Esper portion of the main set, and early spoilers suggest it interacts with artifact creatures in ways that reward a dedicated build. Face a Dilemma appears to be a modal mechanic tied to the set's episode Sagas, which dramatise key moments from across the franchise's history.

Early card reveals already include a mythic Captain James T. Kirk (mono-red, built around the modal theme), a mythic Kathryn Janeway, and the Enterprise-D as a Spacecraft permanent.

The Collector Highlights

The headline collector feature is a run of signed headliner cards: seven cards depicting iconic Star Trek captains, each hand-signed by the actor who originally portrayed that character. There are approximately 250 copies of each signed card in existence, and they are found exclusively in Collector Boosters. For UK collectors, it is worth sourcing Collector Boosters from a trusted local game store or reputable online retailer — sealed product integrity matters a great deal when chasing low-print-run signed cards.

What to Do Now

Prerelease kit availability at UK local game stores will open up soon — it is worth registering your interest with your LGS now if you plan to play sealed during prerelease week (6–12 November). For Commander players, the four precons cover a wide range of budgets and play styles; the Borg and Klingon decks in particular look likely to generate the most competitive interest once decklists are confirmed.
