Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit — Global Release This Thursday: What to Buy and Where to Play

The wait is almost over. After a week of Prerelease events at local game stores, Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit releases worldwide on Thursday 14 August 2026. If you missed Prerelease weekend or simply want to know what to pick up on launch day, here is your complete buying guide.

The Release in Brief

The Hobbit is Magic's second Universes Beyond Tolkien set and the first Tolkien expansion to be legal in Standard. The set follows Bilbo Baggins from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, with Adventure as its primary returning mechanic alongside three brand-new mechanics: Storied, Recruit, and hone counters, plus Amass returning to build Goblin armies. The main set (HOB) contains 321 cards and enters Standard on release day; a companion eternal-legal set (HOC) is also available, legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.

For players who want to try the set digitally first, MTG Arena launched The Hobbit on 11 August — so you may already have a feel for some of the new cards before cracking your first physical booster.

What to Buy

Play Boosters are the standard entry point for draft and sealed play, and for casual collectors hunting rares. Each booster feeds directly into The Hobbit Draft and Sealed formats.

Collector Boosters are where the set's most eye-catching treatments live. The Hobbit boasts an exceptional range of Booster Fun finishes, including Book Art cards featuring original paintings by Ted Nasmith and Tyler Jacobson, and a remarkable Dwarven Language text treatment that is unlike anything else previously printed in Magic.

Scene Boxes replace the traditional Commander preconstructed decks this time around. Two boxes are available — Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug — each containing three Play Boosters and six mechanically unique borderless foil cards that combine into a displayable panoramic artwork. These are particularly strong picks for Tolkien fans and display collectors.

Bundles and five free monocoloured Welcome Decks round out the product lineup, with the Welcome Decks making this an excellent set to introduce new players to the game.

A Gift Bundle is confirmed for a later drop on 4 September, so there is no need to panic-buy if you are waiting for that specific product.

The Chase Card: Smaug the Magnificent

The headline card of the set is Smaug, the Magnificent — a 6/6 Dragon with flying and haste that generates Treasure tokens when attacking. The Gleaming Gold treatment variant, featuring art by Ted Nasmith and a specially crafted frame, is a Collector Booster exclusive with an extremely limited print run of approximately 500 copies worldwide. Even the standard non-foil version is commanding significant prices at launch, making Smaug the clear collector centrepiece of the set.

Standard Legality

The Hobbit is the first Tolkien-universe Universes Beyond set to be legal in Standard, which makes it significant not just for collectors but for competitive players too. All HOB expansion cards enter Standard on 14 August. If you are building or updating a Standard deck, this is the set to watch — Adventure synergies in particular could have a real impact on the format in the weeks ahead.

Cards in the HOC eternal set remain legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage only, so keep an eye on which set code is printed on any singles you pick up.
