MTG Star Trek: Signed Headliner Cards Explained — Magic's Brand-New Card Type Arrives in November

Wizards of the Coast has revealed a first-ever card type for Magic: The Gathering — signed Headliner cards featuring real actor autographs. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the Star Trek set's November release.

Magic: The Gathering's next big release is almost here, and it comes with a piece of genuine history attached. The Star Trek Universes Beyond set launches on 13 November 2026, but the conversation right now isn't just about starships and Federation mechanics — it's about a brand-new card type that has never existed in Magic's thirty-plus years: the signed Headliner card.

What Are Signed Headliner Cards?

Headliner cards are already one of Magic's rarest treatments — serialised foil cards numbered 1 to 500, with only one copy of any given number in existence. The Star Trek set changes that format in a significant way. For the first time, a selection of Headliner cards will carry real, pen-to-card signatures from Star Trek actors who portrayed the characters depicted on them.

The confirmed characters are Kirk, Spock, Picard, Janeway, Seven of Nine, Geordi, and Data — and the signatures come from actors including Patrick Stewart and Jeri Ryan, among others. Because each card is physically signed by hand, no two copies are identical: the unique serial number that typically appears on Headliner cards has been replaced by the actor's actual signature, meaning every copy of a given signed Headliner is a one-of-a-kind object. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that roughly 250 signed copies exist for each character.

This is a meaningful departure from the standard Headliner format. Standard Headliners are distinguished by their serialisation; signed Headliners are distinguished by the signatures themselves, making them collectible in a way that sits closer to traditional sports memorabilia than a trading card game product.

Preview Season Is Starting Right Now

Star Trek's full preview season kicked off on 20 October 2026, with the debut broadcast live on the official Magic: The Gathering YouTube channel and Twitch. The complete card image gallery is set to be published on 30 October, updated each weekday morning throughout the preview window.

Prerelease events at local game stores run from 6–12 November, giving players a chance to crack packs a week before the worldwide release on 13 November. If you want to play Star Trek at prerelease, now is the time to check in with your local store about event sign-ups and ticket availability.

Four Commander Decks to Choose From

Alongside the main booster set, Star Trek ships with four Commander decks on release day: Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, and We Are the Borg. Each ready-to-play 100-card deck includes 33 Star Trek-themed cards new to Magic, plus a foil borderless Mythic Rare legendary creature as the face commander. If you're primarily a Commander player, these decks are worth pre-ordering from your local game store now — demand for Universes Beyond Commander decks has been consistently high, and shelf stock at launch can move quickly.

Why This Matters for Collectors

The signed Headliner cards represent an entirely new tier of Magic collectible. Unlike Secret Lair drops or traditional serialised cards, the value of a signed Headliner is inseparable from the person who signed it — which means condition, signature clarity, and the cultural prominence of the character will all play into how these are perceived on the secondary market once the set is open.

For UK collectors, the usual advice applies: buy sealed products from reputable UK retailers to ensure you're getting genuine stock, and be cautious of early secondary-market listings at significant premiums before the set has even released.

With previews live and prerelease just weeks away, now is the moment to decide which Star Trek products you want to chase — before the warp drive kicks in and November arrives faster than expected.
