Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution — Pitch Black: Prerelease Guide and What to Expect on 17 July

Prereleases for Mega Evolution — Pitch Black land at local game stores from 4–12 July, giving UK collectors an early look at Mega Darkrai ex and more. Here's everything you need to know before the set drops on 17 July.

The Mega Evolution era's darkest chapter is almost here. Mega Evolution — Pitch Black is the fifth English expansion in the 2026 Pokémon TCG block, and prereleases are scheduled from 4–12 July 2026 — giving UK players a chance to crack packs and play with the cards a full week before the global release on 17 July 2026.

What Is Pitch Black?

Pitch Black is the English equivalent of Japan's Abyss Eye set, and it marks a noticeable tonal shift from the earlier Mega Evolution expansions. Darker themes run throughout, tied directly into the world of Pokémon Legends Z-A: Mega Dimension. The set contains over 115 cards and introduces six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex at its heart: Mega Darkrai ex (the cover star), Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, and Mega Excadrill ex, among others. Alongside those, players can expect new Trainer cards, Illustration Rares, and artwork inspired by the Mega Dimension aesthetic.

Mega Darkrai ex is already drawing significant collector attention. Dark-type Pokémon have a long history of producing sought-after chase cards, and Darkrai's combination of moody full-art treatments and competitive potential means it is likely to be one of the most talked-about pulls of the summer.

What Happens at a Prerelease?

Pokémon TCG prereleases are run through local game stores and hobby shops. You'll typically receive a Build & Battle Box for the set — a prerelease kit containing four booster packs from Pitch Black plus a stamped promo card. The idea is to build a 40-card deck on the spot from what you open and play sealed games against other attendees.

For newer collectors, prereleases are one of the best ways to dip into competitive play in a low-pressure environment, since everyone is working with whatever they pull on the day. For seasoned players, it's the first chance to evaluate Pitch Black's metagame potential in person. Check with your local game store now to register — popular prerelease slots can fill up quickly.

Key Cards to Watch

Beyond the headline Mega Darkrai ex, a few other names are already generating buzz ahead of the set's release:

  • Mega Zeraora ex — a fast, aggressive attacker that could slot into existing Electric-type strategies.
  • Mega Chandelure ex — Ghost/Fire typing gives it unusual coverage, and Chandelure has a dedicated fanbase that tends to push prices on its cards.
  • Mega Excadrill ex — a Ground-type option that could appeal to players looking for something outside the obvious chase slots.

The set also continues the Mega Attack Rare rarity introduced earlier in the Mega Evolution block — full-art cards featuring retro katakana attack text that have become a collector favourite since the era began.

Planning Your Purchase

With a global simultaneous release on 17 July, UK shops should have stock on day one — a welcome improvement on the regional staggering that frustrated collectors in previous years. Standard products to look out for include booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, booster bundles, and sleeved packs. If Chaos Rising and Perfect Order are anything to go by, ETBs are the most practical single purchase for a mix of play value and collector content.

Budget-conscious collectors may want to hold one or two packs in reserve: the 30th Celebration set follows in September, and that all-foil anniversary release is widely expected to be among the most in-demand Pokémon TCG products of the decade.

The Bigger Picture

Pitch Black sits at a pivotal point in the 2026 Pokémon TCG calendar. After it, Storm Emerald (featuring Mega Rayquaza ex) is expected in August or September, followed by the landmark 30th Celebration set on 18 September. For collectors and players alike, July's prerelease weekend is a great moment to get stuck in — the second half of the year is shaping up to be one of the most exciting stretches the Pokémon TCG has seen in a long time.
